High CBD flower: how to judge quality from the lab report and the bud

In short. “High CBD” has no legal meaning. On a good bag it means a large total CBD figure on a lab report that matches the lot, with total THC at or under 0.3%. Quality is the rest: a full safety panel, an even cure, careful trim and a clean smell. Our menu today is not CBD flower; it is high-THCA hemp flower.

Checked Oct. 4, 2026.

Read the number the right way

Raw CBD flower holds mostly CBDA, which becomes CBD when heated. A lab report gives both. The figure that compares one bag with another is:

Total CBD = CBD + (0.877 × CBDA)

The 0.877 is the share of CBDA’s weight left once it loses its acid group as CO₂. The same factor is used for THCA and total THC (7 CFR 990.1). If a seller prints only “CBDA 16%”, the total CBD is about 14%.

Why a bigger CBD number needs a second look

The plant makes CBDA and THCA from the same parent acid, and a CBD-bred plant still makes some THCA. Because the same plant makes both, a higher CBD figure can come with more THCA as well. A Cornell trial of 30 high-CBD hemp cultivars found wide swings within and between cultivars and called for more breeding toward legally compliant plants (Stack and colleagues, GCB Bioenergy, 2021). So when you see a very high CBD figure, check total THC on the same report. From Dec. 11, 2026, flower over 0.3% total THC is not hemp under federal law (P.L. 119-37, sec. 781; date set by H.R. 6500).

Six checks on the lab report

  1. The lot code matches the bag. A report for a different lot tells you nothing about yours.
  2. A recent test date, after harvest, on the finished flower rather than a field sample.
  3. Dry weight basis. Figures “as received” include water and read lower.
  4. Total CBD and total THC printed, or enough lines to do both sums.
  5. A contaminant panel: pesticides, heavy metals, microbials and mould. A potency-only report is half a report.
  6. A named lab you can look up, with an accreditation number on the report.

Five checks on the bud

  • Cure. Stems should snap rather than bend; buds should not crumble to dust or feel damp.
  • Trim. Sugar leaves trimmed close, no long fan leaves or stems sold as weight.
  • Resin. Visible trichomes that have not been rubbed off by rough handling.
  • Smell. Clear and specific. A hay or grass smell usually means a rushed dry.
  • No mould or dust. Grey fuzz, a musty smell or white powder that is not resin are reasons to stop.

What high CBD flower is not

It is not a medicine. The FDA has approved one CBD drug, a prescription for two rare seizure disorders, and says it has not reviewed other CBD products for safety or effect (FDA). The NIH notes that CBD has been linked to liver injury and to interactions with other drugs, and that shop-bought CBD products may not match their labels (NCCIH). If you take medicine, ask your doctor first. We make no health claims for any flower.

What we sell today

The same quality checks apply to our own menu, but the product is different. It is greenhouse hemp THCA flower, and each product shows its grade, THCA % and total THC from its lab report. A lot without lab values stays off the menu. After Dec. 11, 2026 we plan to sell CBD and CBG flower here, held to the checks on this page.

Our menu today is high-THCA hemp flower, not CBD flower. Smoked, it gets you high and shows up on THC drug tests.

Questions

What counts as high CBD flower?
There is no legal definition. Sellers use it for flower whose lab report shows a large total CBD figure (CBD plus 0.877 times CBDA) with total THC at or under 0.3%. Compare total CBD on the COA, not the word on the bag.
How do I know CBD flower is good quality?
Start with the paperwork: a lab report whose lot code matches the bag, recent test date, total CBD and total THC printed, and a contaminant panel (pesticides, heavy metals, microbials, mould). Then the bud: an even cure, careful trim, intact resin and a clean smell.
Is more CBD always better?
Not as a measure of quality. A plant that makes more CBD can also make more THCA, so a very high CBD number needs a close look at total THC. A clean, well-cured bud with a matching lab report beats a big number with no report.
Do you sell high CBD flower?
Not today. Our menu is high-THCA hemp flower, not CBD flower. Smoked, it gets you high and shows up on THC drug tests. We plan to sell CBD and CBG flower after Dec. 11, 2026.
